Course Overview

This comprehensive continuing education course is designed for healthcare professionals who work with patients with diabetes. The course provides an in-depth understanding of diabetes, including its pathophysiology, complications, and the role of healthcare interventions in managing the condition. Participants will learn about the physiological functions of the pancreas and liver, the differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and the relationship between diabetes and obesity. The course also covers current medical management strategies, common diabetes-associated complications, and the application of exercise and lifestyle amendments to improve patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Distinguish the physiological functions of the pancreas and liver as they relate to metabolism and diabetes. 
  • Analyze the pathogenesis of diabetes including the differences in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.   
  • Connect the physiological relationship between diabetes and obesity.
  • Differentiate current medical management strategies related to insulin and pharmaceuticals.  
  • Categorize common diabetes-associated medical complications including diabetic wounds and amputation. 
  • Distinguish diabetes-related functional and occupational impairments.   
  • Apply a comprehensive healthcare model to address exercise and lifestyle amendments for individuals with diabetes. 

About the Author/Presenter

Andrew Hodgdon, PT practices physical therapy in an acute hospital care setting. He is enthusiastic about wellness, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and movement science. He also serves as a professional writer of physical therapy content for continuing education curriculum development and other peer-reviewed publications within the physical therapy industry. He enjoys taking what he learns in the acute hospital care setting of his everyday work and translating it into subjects that are interesting, informative, and thought-provoking for others in the physical therapy profession. Currently, Andrew is the senior physical therapist at Kaiser Permanente in Fresno, California. 

Dr. Morgan Rotella, PT, DPT received her doctorate in physical therapy from Ohio State University in 2019. She has been working as an outpatient orthopedic and vestibular physical therapist for more than four years and is a certified vestibular and concussion rehabilitation specialist per the American Institute of Balance. Outside of working as a clinician, she works as an author and editor for health blogs and video content to ensure appropriate information is available regarding common medical conditions and physical therapy considerations. Furthermore, she has experience in reviewing, summarizing, and contributing to a number of physical therapy continuing education courses.
