Course Overview

This course outlines the most current diagnostic criteria, evaluation, and treatment approaches for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Rehab professionals will gain an understanding of assessment tools, intervention techniques, and strategies?to provide family centered care. Frameworks and models of care will provide a foundation of direct treatment interventions for the child and coaching families. Through task analysis and environmental modifications, the audience will be able to apply these principles to their interactions with children and families in order for each child to reach their greatest potential.  

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Classify the hallmarks of ASD by identifying specific characteristics to focus on during screening children.
  • Analyze intervention strategies to use with children who have ASD across various settings.
  • Differentiate specific evidence-based resources to create a treatment plan.
  • Analyze how children with ASD may have disrupted activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL).
  • Arrange an understanding of how to partner and work closely with families of children with ASD.
  • Relate how various members of the interdisciplinary team play a role in a child’s success.
  • Differentiate between behavioral challenges and sensory differences.
  • Outline how essential it is to learn about each child’s unique sensory profile.
     

About the Author/Presenter 

Jessica Restivo, MS, OTR/L, NTMTC, is an occupational therapist based in New York City. As an occupational therapist, she works with children and families across settings such as the neonatal intensive care unit(NICU), pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), pediatric unit, early intervention, and telehealth. She serves on the Board of Directors for the National Perinatal Association and fulfills the role as vice president of development. Her current research focuses on minimizing stress in the neonatal intensive care unit by using developmental aids. Ms. Restivo has presented various topics at institutions such as NYSSHLA, Wagner College, SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, and the National Perinatal Association Conference. Her publications include “Using an Interdisciplinary Educational Video to Enhance Pediatric Residents’ Understanding of OT Services” in Physical Medicine and Rehab International.
