Course Overview

Annually, there are approximately 30-50 million concussion cases that occur globally, with 3-4 million new cases within the U.S.. Concussion incidences continue to rise with each passing year (Strauss, 2022). The importance of concussion education has become apparent with these statistics. This course delves into a comprehensive overview of what is a concussion, how to treat and/or manage concussion symptoms, and prevention strategies. Gaining a good understanding of the ideas and concepts around concussions will aid in the management, diagnosis, rehabilitation, and education of the patient in regards to this condition. This course can aid healthcare professionals in promoting better patient outcomes and a quicker return to daily and occupational activities. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Differentiate the key concepts, history and epidemiology of concussions
  • Analyze the anatomy of the brain and the biomechanical forces that cause concussions 
  • Distinguish the common concussion symptoms and how they impact participation in daily and functional activities
  • Categorize various concussion assessment tools and diagnostic methods
  • Recall effective treatment plans for concussion management for patients to appropriately return to play, sport and occupation
  • Apply prevention strategies to reduce to risk of concussions
  • Differentiate the roles of the multidisciplinary team involved in concussion management

About the Author/Presenter 

Vince Fedorowich is currently the Latin American Medical Coordinator with the Milwaukee Brewers. Prior to working with the Milwaukee Brewers, he was the Head Athletic Trainer and an Instructor in the Division of Health Sciences at Missouri Valley College. Vince treated and educated student-athletes at Missouri Valley College for 8 years. He holds a Master's degree in Education (emphasis in Athletic Training) from Old Dominion University and received his Bachelor of Arts while double majoring in Physical Education and Athletic Training from Graceland University. Vince is a Certified Athletic Trainer who possesses a Missouri Athletic Training license.

Before Missouri Valley College, Vince traveled extensively throughout North America practicing as an Athletic Trainer in professional hockey, baseball, and the high school setting. Through his experiences and education, he developed interests in the areas of treatment and prevention of lower back injuries and concussion management. Vince is very passionate about helping and educating people, which meshes with his love of sports, making his current position the ideal place for him to practice. Vince is originally from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, but currently resides in Marshall, Missouri with his wife Rina.
