Course Overview
This course is intended to equip healthcare team members with information about the evidence and application of current effective interprofessional approaches for people with dementia to optimize their function and quality of life. Initially, diagnostic and staging factors of dementia will be shared to recognize the unique differences in each person living with dementia. Then types of memory will be described so that participants can best understand the deficits and remaining strengths of different people with dementia. From that point, effective strategies will be shared, to include evidence supporting each in the optimization of function and quality of life for clients and patients with dementia and related impairments. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Analyze diagnostic and staging factors to consider when planning treatments for people with dementia.
  • Assess the external strategies found to be effective for facilitating memory deficits.
  • Distinguish examples of external memory aids that may be effective for individuals with memory impairments.
  • Analyze evidence supporting the errorless learning instructional method.
  • Apply functional examples for utilizing the vanishing cues instructional strategy.
  • Indicate how the spaced retrieval technique has been found to be effective for teaching new functions for people with memory impairments.
  • Analyze examples of successes found by utilizing the Montessori approach.

About the Author/Presenter 
Lisa Milliken MA, CCC-SLP, FNAP, CDP, RAC-CT, CADDCT has served as a practitioner, regional manager, vice president, consultant, compliance director, and education specialist. She has lectured at the state and national levels with over 400 professional continuing education courses on topics of importance to healthcare professionals. She is also a Certified Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care Trainer and has mentored team members across the country in retirement communities on clinical programming for the past 30 years. 
She is currently the director of research and program development for Regency Integrated Health Services Therapy Consulting. She is also the owner of Milliken Healthcare Consulting, where she teaches conferences across the country. Lisa is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, where she serves as a state advocate for Medicare policy for Texas, is president of the Texas Speech-Language and Hearing Association (TSHA), and is a distinguished fellow of public policy for the National Academies of Practice. She is also on the Advisory Council for the Houston Christian University’s Leadership Program and is author of the book Resilience: Rising Above Life’s Challenges.
