Prevention and Treatment of Hip Fractures
Course Overview
This comprehensive course covers the prevention and treatment of hip fractures, with a focus on fall prevention strategies and post-operative rehabilitation. The course examines various surgical approaches, assessment tools, and evidence-based interventions for both preventing falls and optimizing recovery after hip fracture surgery. Healthcare professionals will learn about risk assessment, treatment options, and rehabilitation protocols to improve patient outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Distinguish the differences between the different types of hip fractures including the characteristics and treatment for each
- Relate the postoperative hip precautions to activities of daily living
- Differentiate the rehabilitation approaches for the surgical and non-surgical client
- Analyze the different surgical approaches available for hip fracture including the advantages and disadvantages of each
- Implement therapeutic exercises for postoperative hip surgery across all phases of rehabilitation
- Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of a posterior, a lateral, and an anterior approach for a total hip replacement
- Assess the progression of rehabilitation from acute care to inpatient rehabilitation to home health, to outpatient rehabilitation to promote patient independence
- Relate the practical and effective preventative measures in daily and occupational activities for prevention of hip fractures
About the Author/Presenter
Dr. Ryan Wadas, PT, DPT earned his bachelor’s degree in human biology from the University of Kansas in 2005 and his doctorate degree in physical therapy in 2009 from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Wadas has over 12 years of outpatient orthopedic physical therapy (PT) experience, during the majority of which he served as a clinical instructor working with PT and physical therapy assistant (PTA) students. He also has 9 years of experience in academics. Dr. Wadas is currently a professor at South University’s PTA program in Tampa, Florida, with 7 years as adjunct faculty at Nova Southeastern University’s DPT program in Clearwater, Florida. Dr. Wadas has advanced training and coursework in spinal manipulation through the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy (AAMT), the McKenzie Method to Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), vestibular therapy training, myofascial practitioner cupping certification, and selective functional movement assessment (SFMA).
