Vestibular Rehab for Non-Dizzy Patients

105

Course Overview
Balance dysfunction is one of the leading causes of functional limitation and even disability among elderly patients. And when working to improve a patient's balance, the vestibular system is often overlooked; which is regrettable as a large portion of our balance is derived from this system.
This course focuses on adding specific vestibular assessment and training tools to a therapist’s skills to further maximize a patient’s reduced fall risk and overall functional independence.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Distinguish more extensive knowledge of the anatomy and neuropathways of the peripheral and central vestibular systems.
  • Analyze how the vestibular system works in conjunction with the somatosensory and visual systems and concurrent postural reactions.
  • Analyze how to determine vestibular abnormalities in patients with functional and occupational limitations across multiple systems and diagnoses.
  • Differentiate common diagnoses when the vestibular system is compromised.
  • Assess functional and occupational limitations due to vestibular impairments in order to develop an appropriate plan of care.
  • Predict presence of BPPV and establish appropriate treatment interventions.
  • Assess vestibular retraining in conjunction with other functional impairments and determine how to progress these interventions.
