FAQs

How many CE hours do Texas RNs and LVNs need for license renewal?

Texas RNs and LVNs need 20 contact hours of continuing education every 2-year renewal cycle. Of those, 2 hours are mandatory and 18 are electives. APNs with prescriptive authority need 25 hours total.

What mandatory CE topics does the Texas Board of Nursing require?

All Texas nurses must complete an HHSC-approved Human Trafficking Prevention course each renewal. After March 12, 2025, only courses listed on the HHSC website meet this requirement. Additionally, 2 hours of Nursing Ethics are required every third biennium (every 6 years). Nurses providing older adult or geriatric care need 2 additional hours in that specialty.

When does my Texas nursing license expire?

Texas nursing licenses renew every 2 years based on your individual birth month, so expiration dates vary by nurse. Check your specific renewal date through the Texas Board of Nursing website at bon.texas.gov. All required CE hours must be completed before your renewal date.

Can I complete all my Texas nursing CEUs online?

Yes. Texas has no online limitations. All 20 required contact hours (or 25 for APNs with prescriptive authority) can be completed through Texas Board of Nursing-approved online providers.

What are the CE requirements for Texas APNs with prescriptive authority?

Texas APNs with prescriptive authority need 25 total hours per cycle, including 5 hours of Pharmacotherapeutics and 4 hours (2 annually) of Safe and Effective Pain Management for controlled substances, in addition to the standard mandatory topics. DEA-registered APNs must also complete a one-time 8-hour MATE Act training.

Does Texas require a specific CE course for nurses working in emergency rooms?

Yes. Texas ER nurses must complete a one-time 2-hour CE course on forensic evidence collection within 2 years of initial emergency room employment. These hours count toward your 20-hour total. Nurses performing forensic examinations also need one-time basic forensic evidence collection training.

Is Elite Learning an approved CE provider for Texas nurses?

Yes. Elite Learning is an approved provider of continuing education recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing. All applicable courses are clearly marked as meeting Texas BON requirements, and completion is reported in accordance with Texas board rules.
