Excess hours may not be carried over to the next cycle. Approved courses include ACCME-accredited programs (AMA PRA Category 1), programs required for national board certification, AAFP Prescribed Credit programs, or AOA Category 1-A programs.

Mandatory CE Topics

Substance Use Disorder and Safe Prescribing
Colorado licensees must complete 2 hours every renewal period demonstrating competency in preventing substance abuse and treating patients with substance use disorders, covering safe opioid and benzodiazepine prescribing, recognition and referral of substance use disorders, and use of the state's prescription drug monitoring program.

Course option: Responsible and Effective Opioid Prescribing

Federal Requirements

DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
