One-Time Requirements

Controlled Substance Prescribing Practices
Physicians who hold an active DEA registration and prescribe controlled substances must complete 3 hours on controlled substance prescribing practices (prescribing guidelines, recognizing signs of misuse or abuse, and prescribing for chronic pain management), one time, due at the first renewal after January 1, 2018, or the first renewal after initial licensure.

Course option: Effective Management of Acute and Chronic Pain with Opioid Analgesics, 2nd Edition

Professional Boundaries and Sexual Misconduct
Physicians must complete 2 hours on professional boundaries and sexual misconduct, one time, due at the first renewal after initial licensure or the first license renewal after January 1, 2022.

Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements

Pain Management/Palliative Medicine CE for High-Volume Opioid Prescribers
Physicians who are not certified in pain management or palliative medicine, and whose opioid pain management patients make up 50% or more of their practice, must complete 20 hours specific to pain management or palliative medicine every 2 years.

Course option: Palliative Care and Pain Management at the End of Life

Renewal CE Requirements

Physician Assistants
Georgia PAs must complete 10 hours directly related to their Board-approved primary supervising physician's specialty every 2 years, within the overall 40-hour renewal requirement.

Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements

Prescriptive Authority
PAs authorized to issue prescription drug orders must complete 3 hours in practice-specific pharmaceuticals every 2 years. PAs delegated authority to issue prescription drug or device orders for hydrocodone, oxycodone, or compounds thereof must complete 1 additional hour on the appropriate ordering and use of these medications every 2 years.

Death Certificate Execution
PAs authorized to sign death certificates must complete 1 additional hour every 2 years on the recognition and documentation of the causes of death and appropriate execution of death certificates.
