Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements

Pain Management and Addiction CE (Controlled Substance Prescribers)
Physicians authorized to prescribe or dispense controlled substances must complete 4.5 hours in pain management and/or addiction disorders every 3 years. DEA-licensed prescribers of buprenorphine-containing products must complete 12 hours of Category 1 CME in addiction medicine as part of their total CE every 3 years.

Medicinal Cannabis Certification
Physicians certifying patients for medicinal cannabis must complete 3 hours in medicinal cannabis every renewal period (6 hours with the initial certifying application).

One-Time Requirements

Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma
Physicians in Pediatric, Radiology, Family Practice, Emergency Medicine, or Urgent Care specialties must complete 1 hour on pediatric abusive head trauma, one time, within 5 years of initial licensure.

Domestic Violence
Primary care physicians must complete 3 hours on domestic violence, one time, within 3 years of initial licensure.

DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.

Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements

Controlled Substance Prescribing (Schedule III-V)
PAs authorized to prescribe and administer Schedule III, IV, or V controlled substances must complete a minimum of 7.5 hours of approved CE on controlled substance diversion, pain management, addiction disorders, or use of Kentucky's prescription monitoring system, within their first 2 years of licensure/prior to first renewal and every renewal thereafter.
