Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements
Pain Management and Addiction CE (Controlled Substance Prescribers)
Physicians authorized to prescribe or dispense controlled substances must complete 4.5 hours in pain management and/or addiction disorders every 3 years. DEA-licensed prescribers of buprenorphine-containing products must complete 12 hours of Category 1 CME in addiction medicine as part of their total CE every 3 years.

Medicinal Cannabis Certification
Physicians certifying patients for medicinal cannabis must complete 3 hours in medicinal cannabis every renewal period (6 hours with the initial certifying application).
One-Time Requirements
Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma
Physicians in Pediatric, Radiology, Family Practice, Emergency Medicine, or Urgent Care specialties must complete 1 hour on pediatric abusive head trauma, one time, within 5 years of initial licensure.

Domestic Violence
Primary care physicians must complete 3 hours on domestic violence, one time, within 3 years of initial licensure.

Federal Requirements
DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
