One-Time Requirements

Implicit Bias Training
For the first license renewal on or after April 1, 2022, Maryland licensees must complete implicit bias training, one time.

Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements

Menopause CE Double-Credit Incentive
Maryland health occupations boards that require CE must grant 2 hours of continuing education credit for every 1 hour completed on perimenopausal, menopausal, or postmenopausal evaluation and treatment. This is an optional incentive, not a mandatory topic or additional hour requirement.

Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS) Registration
Effective October 1, 2018, new and renewal applicants for a Maryland CDS registration must complete 2 hours related to prescribing or dispensing controlled dangerous substances, one time.

Course option: Prescription Opioids: Risk Management and Strategies for Safe Use

Pediatric Trauma Center Medical Staff
Attending surgeons and PAs taking pediatric trauma calls must complete 16 hours of trauma-related CE every year.

Course option (provides 15 of the required 16 hours): Transport Methods for Critically Ill Patients

DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.

Physician Assistants
Maryland PAs must complete 50 hours of Category 1 CME every renewal period, or provide proof of current NCCPA certification, including 8 hours in Category 1 pharmacology topics. For the first renewal after initial licensure, PAs need only complete the 8-hour pharmacology requirement.
