MDs and DOs must complete 1 hour reviewing the New Mexico Medical Practice Act and Board Rules every renewal period.
Practice-Based or Conditional Requirements
Pain Management CE (Controlled Substance Registrants)
MDs and DOs with an active DEA registration and New Mexico controlled substances registration must complete 5 hours in pain management during their first year of licensure and every renewal thereafter.

Medical Cannabis Certifying Practitioners
The New Mexico Department of Health encourages (but does not require) practitioners who certify patients for medical cannabis to complete at least 2 CME hours annually related to the medicinal use of cannabis.

Federal Requirements
DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
