Organ and Tissue Donation
Beginning May 1, 2026, Pennsylvania osteopathic physicians must complete a 2-hour continuing education requirement on the organ and tissue donation and recovery process. This requirement must be completed one time within five years of initial licensure or within five years of license renewal, whichever occurs first.

Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting
Pennsylvania DOs who are mandated reporters must complete 2 hours of child abuse recognition and reporting training every renewal period (3 hours at initial licensure).

Patient Safety and Risk Management
DOs must complete 12 hours of Category 1 or 2 CME in patient safety and risk management every renewal period.

Pain Management, Addiction, or Opioid Prescribing (Prescriptive Authority)
DOs with prescriptive authority must complete 2 hours in pain management, identification of addiction, or the practices of prescribing or dispensing opioids every renewal period.

One-Time Requirements

Prescriptive Authority Initial Training
Within 1 year of receiving prescriptive authority, DOs must complete 4 hours of Board-approved education (2 hours in pain management or addiction and 2 hours in the practices of prescribing or dispensing opioids), one time.

DEA MATE Act Requirement
DEA-registered practitioners, except those who are solely veterinarians, must complete an 8-hour training on treating and managing patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. This applies one time to DEA registrations or renewals submitted on or after June 27, 2023.
