New Jersey PT/PTA CE requirements
To renew your license, you must complete 30 total hours of continuing education. These hours are split into two categories: mandatory and elective. Staying organized and planning ahead can make this process smooth and stress-free.
Mandatory hours
All PTs and PTAs must complete 4 mandatory hours in jurisprudence and professional ethics.
- Jurisprudence (1.5 hours): You need to complete a 1.5-credit Jurisprudence Assessment Module. The New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners provides a list of approved sponsors for this module on its website.
- Ethics (2.5 hours): You can complete any ethics course of 2.5 credits or more. PTs and PTAs can take this course via distance learning or a live session.
Elective hours
You must complete 26 elective hours to meet the 30-hour total. These hours offer a great chance to explore topics that interest you and enhance your professional skills. You can choose courses that deepen your expertise in a specific area of physical therapy.
Online course information
Online learning offers a flexible way to earn your CE credits. However, New Jersey has specific limits on how many hours you can complete online.
Online limitations
PTs and PTAs can complete a maximum of 10 hours of continuing education through home study or online courses. Be sure to track your online hours carefully to stay within this limit. The remaining 20 hours must be completed through in-person courses or other approved formats.
