This course provides a comprehensive overview of safety, sanitation, and infection control for Ohio cosmetologists. Participants will explore the Ohio Administrative Code rules, identify potential hazards and learn best practices for maintaining a safe and sanitary salon environment. The course covers standards for effective practice, detailing professionals' rights as outlined by the U.S. Department of Labor. Additionally, this course discusses the roles of key regulatory agencies, including the CDC, OSHA, FDA, and EPA—entities that regulate compliance that protect both cosmetologists and clients within the workplace.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Define the Ohio Administrative Code rules for safety, sanitation, and infection control in cosmetology. 
  • Identify the safety and sanitation hazards in cosmetology.
  • Explain the standards for safe and effective practice.
  • List the rights of professionals from the United States Department of Labor for safety in the cosmetology workplace.
  • Discuss the role of the CDC, OSHA, FDA, and EPA in Ohio cosmetology.
  • Define cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.
  • List the OAC rules for infection control. 
  • Explain the four main types of pathogens. 
  • Discuss pathways of disease transmission. 
  • Explain universal precautions for infection control. 
  • List OSHA guidelines for salon safety.
  • Recognize hazardous chemicals in salons and the associated Safety Data Sheets.
  • Identify when to disinfect, sanitize, sterilize, or dispose of facial and skincare tools and equipment. 
  • Define the Standard and Universal Precaution procedures and know when and how they apply to safe practice.
