Infection Control for New York Health Care Professionals -2024 Update
About the Course:
This course reviews the seven infection control training elements mandated for New York State healthcare professionals. It details airborne, droplet, and bloodborne pathogens that may be transmitted in the work environment leading to healthcare/hospital-acquired infections (HAI).
Infection prevention and control (IPC) will be addressed to reduce contact and transmission of pathogens, including multidrug-resistant Tiers 1 to 4 organisms. The course follows the syllabus for infection control and prevention issued by the New York State Departments of Health and Education according to New York State law. The current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for enhanced barrier protection (EBP) in skilled nursing facilities, core elements of sepsis, and infection identification and control are included. CDC guidance, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, evidence-based research, and current New York State law are the foundation for course content.?
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the learner will be able to:
- Recognize scientifically accepted infection prevention and control practices for airborne, droplet, and bloodborne pathogens.
- Identify various healthcare-acquired infectious diseases and their modes of transmission to implement effective workplace practices for infection prevention.
- Examine work practice controls designed to reduce transmission of bloodborne pathogens when using sharp instruments and select indicated post-exposure prophylaxis.
- Identify indicators and situations that require the selection of barriers and personal protective equipment to prevent exposure and transmission of potentially infectious material.
- Recognize the health professional’s responsibilities for providing a safe patient care environment in healthcare settings, including leadership roles, according to New York law.
- Identify elements of the New York State Sepsis Improvement Initiative to interpret and address early signs and symptoms of sepsis.
- Examine healthcare-associated disease transmission specific to Tier 1-3 organisms and demonstrate work practices, barriers, and PPE equipment for effective infection control.
About the Author:
Deborah Converse, MA, NBCT, is a career educator and trainer, and she has authored recertification courses in healthcare for 13 years. She has served on the State Board of Education writing teams in Florida and Hawaii to develop standards and examinations to enhance skills for best practice in healthcare and education.
Adrianne E. Avillion, DEd, RN, is an accomplished nursing professional development specialist and healthcare author. She earned her doctoral degree in adult education and her M.S. in nursing from Penn State University and a BSN from Bloomsburg University. Dr. Avillion has held a variety of nursing positions as a staff nurse in critical care and physical medicine and rehabilitation settings with emphasis on neurological and mental health nursing, as well as a number of leadership roles in nursing professional development. She has published extensively and is a frequent presenter at conferences and conventions devoted to the specialty of continuing education and nursing professional development. Dr. Avillion owns and is the CEO of Strategic Nursing Professional Development, a business that specializes in continuing education for healthcare professionals and consulting services in nursing professional development. Her most recent publications include The Path to Stress-Free Nursing Professional Development: 50 No-Nonsense Solutions to Everyday Challenges and Nursing Professional Development: A Practical Guide for Evidence-Based Education.
