Understanding the Myofascial System: The Connection Between Fascia Mobility and Pain
Course Overview
Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a chronic condition that affects your muscles and the fascia around them. With myofascial pain syndrome, pressing on trigger points can cause localized or referred pain. Myofascial pain syndrome is common. Experts estimate that up to 85% of the general population will develop the condition at some point. This course will explore the connection between fascia and (chronic) pain and how we can treat fascia to help people in pain. We will describe the Myofascial System (MS) and explain how a disturbance of this system can be a component of your client’s pain. What treatment options do healthcare providers have to treat Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS)? What does the research and literature suggest for the treatment of MPS? These questions will be answered, and a demonstration of treatment techniques will help you get started on the path of helping people with MPS.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Analyze the structure and function of the myofascial system and its role in musculoskeletal health.
- Assess the symptoms and causes of myofascial pain syndrome and related conditions.
- Differentiate various manual therapy techniques, including myofascial release and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, for pain management.
- Distinguish the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying pain perception and the impact of manual therapy on these processes.
- Arrange a comprehensive pain management plan that incorporates patient education, therapeutic alliance, and lifestyle modifications.
About the Author/Presenter
Pieter L. de Smidt, PT, DPT, MTC, cert MDT, cert DN, trained in The Netherlands and has practiced as a physical therapist since 1988. He moved to the U.S. in 1991 and primarily worked in outpatient orthopedic PT clinics and fitness facilities. He specializes in the treatment of sports- and spine-related injuries and holds multiple certifications in manual therapy, osteopathic manipulation, and dry needling.
