Critical Care (CCRN) Certification Exam Prep Course 13.5
Course release date: 6/1/2026
Course Overview
The Critical Care Nurse Certification (CCRN) specialty track is designed to prepare nurses for the complex, high-risk decision-making required in the intensive care unit. Building on core acute-care foundations, this course focuses on the advanced physiology, continuous monitoring, and anticipatory reasoning needed to manage patients with severe, evolving organ dysfunction.Rather than isolated task-based learning, the course is structured around the way critical care nurses think, monitor, and intervene over time. Learners develop the ability to interpret invasive hemodynamic data, recognize subtle signs of decompensation, titrate life-sustaining therapies, and respond decisively to rapid physiologic changes. Emphasis is placed on mechanism-based reasoning, trend analysis, and prioritization under sustained high acuity, reflecting both bedside ICU practice and the design of the CCRN exam.
The CCRN specialty track addresses the following core domains of critical care nursing:
- Hemodynamic Monitoring – Interpreting invasive and noninvasive data to assess preload, afterload, contractility, and tissue perfusion
- Mechanical Ventilation – Managing ventilator modes, settings, and waveforms while anticipating complications and patient–ventilator interactions
- ARDS & Severe Respiratory Failure – Applying lung-protective strategies, interpreting ABGs in critical illness, and managing refractory hypoxemia
- Advanced Shock States – Differentiating shock physiology, guiding escalation of care, and supporting failing circulatory systems
- Renal Replacement Therapy – Understanding the indications, principles, and nursing responsibilities associated with dialysis and CRRT
- Multi-Organ Failure – Recognizing interdependent organ dysfunction and coordinating care as systems fail simultaneously
- ICU Pharmacology (Pressors &
