About the Course 
The purpose of this introductory level course is to provide healthcare practitioners with basic knowledge of dementia, including types, stages of decline, salient characteristics, related to clinical presentation. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Recognize dementia as a global issue that has the potential to affect patient's functional and occupational performance in clinical practice.
  • Identify signs, symptoms, and neurological hallmarks of each type of dementia.
  • Identify hallmarks of Alzheimer's Disease.
  • Define stages of cognitive impairment and characteristics of each. 

About the Author/Presenter 
Amber Heape, CScD, CCC-SLP, FNAP, CDP, is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Health Professions Education Track in the SLPD program at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Dr. Heape serves in multiple volunteer committees at the state and national levels. She is a Fellow of the National Academies of Practice and is State Advocate for Medicare Policy with for South Carolina’s association. She was a topic co-chair for the 2023 ASHA Convention and will serve again in 2024.  She is the Coordinator for ASHA SIG 15 (Gerontology). Dr. Heape has a passion for clinical education and mentoring future leaders.

  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination. A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
