Fundamentals of Mentorship
Course Overview
This nursing continuing education course introduces the fundamentals of mentorship in nursing and explores how effective nurse mentorship supports professional development, nurse retention, transition to practice, leadership growth, and organizational success. Designed for nurses and nurse leaders across career stages, this introductory nursing CE course distinguishes mentoring from onboarding, orientation, precepting, nurse residency and transition-to-practice programs, and coaching. The course examines the benefits of mentor-mentee relationships for nurses, mentors, healthcare organizations, and the nursing profession, while identifying the personal and professional characteristics that support high-quality nursing mentorship relationships.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Distinguish among the roles of preceptor, mentor, and coach.
- Discuss the benefits of mentoring to mentees, mentors, and organizations.
- Recognize the dynamics of mentoring and mentored relationships.

About the Author/Presenter
Kim Maryniak,?PhD, FNP-C, RNC-NIC, NEA-BC?has more than 37?years of nursing experience across acute care, long-term care, nursing leadership, education, quality improvement, neonatal intensive care, and family medicine. She is?certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner, in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing, and as a Nurse Executive, Advanced,?and has?been?writing professionally since 2011.
