Course Overview

This course is intended for healthcare professionals who work with people with dementia and dysphagia. This course discusses standards of care and ethical quandaries, and it provides functional suggestions that are immediately implementable by staff. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between dysphagia, dementia, and environmental factors, empowering them to implement effective modifications and interventions.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Identify three modifications to improve environmental factors for patients with dysphagia and dementia. 
  • Recognize effects of diet modification on functional and occupational performance in patients with dysphagia and dementia. 
  • Choose effective caregiver education strategies for working with families of patients with dysphagia and dementia.
     

About the Author/Presenter 
Dr. Amber Heape is an assistant professor and director of the Health Professions Education Track in the SLPD program at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Dr. Heape serves in multiple volunteer committees at the state and national levels. She is a fellow of the National Academies of Practice, is a certified dementia practitioner, and teaches interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary courses related to healthcare in the geriatric population. She is also coordinator for ASHA SIG 15 (gerontology). Dr. Heape has a passion for clinical education and mentoring future leaders.
