Med/Surg (MEDSURG-BC) Certification Exam Prep Course 13
Course release date: 6/1/2026
Course Overview
The Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification specialty track prepares nurses to manage the complex, evolving needs of adult patients across the continuum of care. Building on core acute-care foundations, this course emphasizes the clinical judgment, coordination, and longitudinal thinking required in medical-surgical practice and reflected on the CMSRN exam.Rather than focusing solely on isolated illnesses, the course is organized around how medical-surgical nurses recognize deterioration, manage chronic conditions, support recovery, and coordinate safe transitions of care. Learners develop the ability to synthesize assessment findings, lab trends, and patient goals to make safe, patient-centered decisions over time. Emphasis is placed on prioritization, patient education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and prevention of complications, which are central to both bedside practice and certification testing.
- The Medical-Surgical specialty track addresses the following core domains of adult inpatient nursing care:
- Chronic Disease Management – Supporting patients with long-term conditions through monitoring, education, and prevention of acute exacerbations
- Post-Operative Care – Recognizing normal recovery versus complications, managing pain, mobility, and wound healing
- Wound & Skin Integrity – Preventing skin breakdown, identifying impaired healing, and applying evidence-based wound care principles
- Diabetes Management – Managing glycemic control, recognizing acute complications, and coordinating long-term self-management strategies
- Renal Disorders – Interpreting renal function changes, managing fluid balance, and caring for patients with acute and chronic kidney disease
- GI Disorders – Assessing gastrointestinal function, managing bowel disorders, bleeding, obstruction, and nutritional needs
