Vaccine-Preventable Diseases
Course Overview
This comprehensive course equips healthcare professionals with up-to-date knowledge and practical skills related to vaccinations across the lifespan. Learners will explore the communicable diseases that are preventable with vaccines, the science behind immunizations, current vaccine schedules, and vulnerable populations at a higher risk for contracting and transmitting contagious diseases. The course will also review best practices for vaccine administration, patient communication strategies, and the management of vaccine hesitancy. Special emphasis is placed on the role of healthcare workers in advocating for immunization compliance and maintaining vaccine safety, and reporting protocols. The course will address legal and ethical responsibilities, storage, and handling, with COVID-19 and flu vaccine updates.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- List the diseases for which vaccines are available.
- Explain the immunological principles behind vaccination and how vaccines prevent disease.
- Describe the pathophysiology of vaccine-preventable diseases.
- Describe contradictions to specific immunizations.

About the Author/Presenter
Abbie Schmitt, MSN-Ed, RN. Abbie is a nurse educator with nursing experience in internal medicine, inpatient rehab, cardiology, emergency medicine, humanitarian relief, and ADN nursing programs. She graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) in 2007, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2012, and a Master’s Degree in Nursing - Nursing Education (MSN-Ed) from Liberty University in 2019.
