Age-related Conditions in Older Adults
Course Overview
The population of older adults is increasing, and it’s important for healthcare professionals to gain insight and understanding about common health issues confronting older adults. Age-related conditions, diseases, and syndromes will be explored, as will evidence-based research showing practical and innovative ways to make positive lifestyle choices to prepare for healthy old age and quality of life while preventing decline. Learners will recognize environmental and biological factors that contribute to age-related physical and mental health changes. Common conditions prompted by age-related cellular changes will be reviewed and correlated to challenges they may present that can lead to the development of other chronic conditions and diseases. Finally, preventative care and healthy lifestyle tips are discussed to identify ways to mitigate age-related illness and empower older adults to live healthy, meaningful lives.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Recognize aspects of age-related biological changes that affect older adult physiology
- Identify specific health conditions that are correlated to age-related changes in the body
- Identify and discern modifiable risk factors that contribute to age-related disease and conditions
- Differentiate between geriatric syndromes that affect older adults and diseases that correlate to them
- Identify into specific conditions and diseases and how they impact the older adult physiology
- Identify healthy lifestyle choices and prevention strategies to delay onset of disease and geriatric syndromes
- Recognize the difference between the concepts of lifespan and healthspan
About the Author/Presenter
Joy Siegel, EdD, MBA spent the past 15 years working in the nonprofit sector as a fundraising consultant. While doing so she became especially partial to working in the social service sector, especially with senior adults. In 2012 Joy achieved a lifelong goal of obtaining a doctoral degree, graduating from Nova Southeastern University with an EdD in Organizational Leadership and Gerontology.
Armed with her education, experience in the social sector, and personal experience as a caregiver to her mother who has been battling Parkinson’s Disease for 20 years, Joy was ready to switch careers and become an Intergenerational Coach. Currently Joy and her partner, Hanna Fink, have developed a sphere of top-notch service providers whose sole purpose in their respective field is to meet the needs of families dealing with the challenges of aging and to assist in providing seniors with the best quality of life.
