About this Course:
"Aquatic Spinal Therapy and Core Training, An Integrated Approach” is an informative course for those health professionals who would like to expand their orthopedic spinal/core aquatic therapy skills or for those who are new to orthopedic aquatic therapy. This course will present spinal/core connections with exercises focusing on increasing mobility, improving stability, strength, and motor control. By integrating an aquatic and land-based approach to spinal/core therapy clinicians can help clients progress quicker and more comfortably with improved outcomes. 

Course Objectives:
  • Recognize why aquatic training when integrated with land-based training can help accelerate progress 
  • Identify the properties of water and fluid dynamics as they relate to the human body 
  • Identify the precautions and contraindications of aquatic therapy 4. Identify the difference between a static versus a dynamic pool 
  • List 3 different types of assistive and resistive equipment 
  • List six basic training benefits for lower quarter dysfunction (improve flexibility, improve ROM and mobility, improve posture, begin strengthening, normalize movement patterns, improve balance, coordination and proprioception) with aquatic interventions. 
  • Recognize the philosophy of Spinal/Core Aquatic Training 
  • Identify common substitution patterns with Spinal/core deep water exercises 
  • List 2 verbal cues to give clients for Spinal/core deep water exercises 
  • Identify common substitution patterns with Spinal/core shallow water exercises 
  • List 2 verbal cues to give clients for Spinal/core shallow water exercises 
  • 12. Recognize common integrated spinal non-surgical protocols 
About the Instructor: 
Rick McAvoy PT, DPT, CSCS,
has specialized in Aquatic Physical Therapy and Sports Performance for over 25 years. Rick is the Owner of RMA, RICK MCAVOY AQUATICS an Aquatic Sports Performance Training and Consulting Company in Southern Maine. Rick is a published author and researcher in the field of Aquatic Therapy and Sports Performance. He trains and consults with numerous athletes and sports teams from professional sports, collegiate and high school teams, along with fitness and healthcare institutions. Rick is a Master Instructor in the Burdenko Method, a specialized form of dynamic aquatic and land-based techniques. Rick lectures nationally and internationally throughout the year teaching the benefits of Aquatic Therapy and Fitness and Sports Performance to health clubs, athletic institutions, and health care practices.
