About the Course
The purpose of this course is to provide practitioners with foundational knowledge of dementia, including stages of decline and symptoms of those stages. Assessment, analysis, and effective documentation will also be a focus of this educational experience.    

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • List differences between normal and abnormal aging 
  • Recognize the two major types of staging scales used by occupational, physical and speech therapists for cognitive decline and limitations in occupational performance. 
  • Identify characteristics of case studies to appropriately stage patients using ACL/GDS 

About the Author/Presenter
Amber Heape CScD, CCC-SLP, FNAP, CDP, CMDCP received her Doctor of Clinical Science in Speech-Language Pathology and a certificate in healthcare education from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions.  She is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, a Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional, and volunteers with organizations that promote and preserve quality care in aging.  She has authored numerous interprofessional continuing education courses and has presented at state and national conferences across the United States. Dr. Heape currently serves on the SIG 15 (Gerontology) Coordinating Committee, ASHA Convention Planning Committee, and is the State Advocate for Medicare Policy (StAMP) for South Carolina.  She co-founded the SCSHA Leadership Development Program as well as a Clinical Fellow mentoring program.  She is a Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, an interprofessional practice and education organization. Dr. Heape has a passion for evidence-based practice and clinical research, and mentors graduate and doctoral students in their research endeavors.

  • View the entire recording which requires a 2-hour commitment of time.
  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination. A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
