About the Course
This course is intended for therapists who care for patients with dysphagia in skilled nursing facilities. It discusses the principles of neuroplasticity that guide dysphagia therapy. It also gets back to the basics of therapeutic strategies- compensatory, rehabilitative, and diet modifications. The evidence-based behind strategies will be clear and easy to understand.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify and define 10 principles of neuroplasticity.
- Explain the three options for therapeutic intervention for dysphagia and examples of each.
- Apply principles of rehabilitation to target specific muscle deficits for dysphagia intervention.
About the Author
Dr. Amber Heape is an assistant professor and director of the Health Professions Education Track in the SLPD program at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Dr. Heape serves in multiple volunteer committees at the state and national levels. She is a fellow of the National Academies of Practice, is a certified dementia practitioner, and teaches interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary courses related to healthcare in the geriatric population. She is also coordinator for ASHA SIG 15 (Gerontology). Dr. Heape has a passion for clinical education and mentoring future leaders.
