Impact of Loneliness on Health and Wellbeing for the Senior Population
About the Course
Loneliness is a precursor to all major illnesses, it can also be a side effect of chronic illness or life transition and can have a direct impact on physical and mental health. Some experts consider loneliness an epidemic, forced social distancing has caused many older people to be isolated which can also exacerbate and impact feelings of loneliness. It is important to note that loneliness is a normal feeling that is a part of the human experience, however, chronic loneliness is considered a leading indicator of morbidity and mortality. Additionally, loneliness can indicate depression or sadness that may be situational but can become chronic if left untreated. Loneliness is also linked to dementia and memory loss.

About the Author
Joy Siegel spent the past 15 years working in the nonprofit sector as a fundraising consultant. While doing so she became especially partial to working in the social service sector, especially with senior adults. In 2012 Joy achieved a lifelong goal of obtaining a doctoral degree, graduating from Nova Southeastern University with an EdD in Organizational Leadership and Gerontology. Armed with her education, experience in the social sector, and personal experience as a caregiver to her mother who has been battling Parkinsons Disease for 20 years, Joy was ready to switch careers and become an Intergenerational Coach. Currently Joy and her partner, Hanna Fink, have developed a sphere of top-notch service providers whose sole purpose in their respective field is to meet the needs of families dealing with the challenges of aging and to assist in providing seniors with the best quality of life.
