About the Course  
This intermediate-level course explores the mental health issues that healthcare professionals face. Healthcare professionals will be able to better understand the epidemiology, risk factors, protective factors and symptoms of mental health disorders. They also will learn about the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare professionals’ mental health, as well as general interventions addressing mental health disorders in healthcare professionals.  

Learning Objectives 

  • Identify risk factors and protective factors for mental health disorders in healthcare professionals.
  • List the symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, sleep disorders, substance use and identify the risk factors and warning signs for suicide.
  • Discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the mental health of healthcare professionals.
  • Identify self-care strategies and distinguish between personal and organizational-based interventions to address mental health disorders in healthcare professionals


About the Author  
Margaret Hughes MSN, RN, PMHNP, CPRNP-PC is a dual-certified psychiatric-mental health and pediatric nurse practitioner who graduated from the Yale School of Nursing in 2016 and from Northeastern University School of Nursing in 2021. She currently works at a small, outpatient psychiatric practice in Boston, MA providing psychiatric care across the lifespan. Prior to this, she worked at a university health center providing healthcare to college students and has also worked at community-based and school-based health centers providing primary care to high-risk, medically underserved populations. She also has experience as a nurse and worked in an outpatient pediatric clinic in Connecticut and at an overnight summer camp in New York.

  • Answer the final examination questions at the end of the course. A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning objectives as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
