Course Overview

Sarcopenia affects between 8% and 50% of adults over age 55 throughout North America. It is annually responsible for a $19 billion burden on the healthcare industry. However, recent surveys reveal that the lay public and even healthcare practitioners are rather unfamiliar with the condition and its effects on the human body. This course will define and investigate the causes of sarcopenia. Participants will also learn how to screen for and treat sarcopenia. To further influence our community’s health and wellness, participants will also learn how to prevent sarcopenia, thus reducing its impact on the economy and our healthcare system. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Relate what sarcopenia is, who it affects, and how it can decrease functional mobility and occupational performance.
  • Differentiate methods of testing patients for sarcopenia.
  • Predict risk factors for developing muscle atrophy.
  • Organize a therapeutic exercise program that effectively treats sarcopenia and improves functional outcomes in daily activity & mobility.
  • Review how to educate patients on the nutritional components for treating sarcopenia.?
  • Utilize evidence-based methods to make therapeutic interventions the most effective in preventing and treating sarcopenia.

About the Author/Presenter 

John Jowers, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS, is a physical therapist, board certified in sports medicine, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. John is the head PT of Launch Physical Therapy and Fitness coaching in Rockville, MD, in the Washington DC suburbs.
