Pediatric Visual Perception and Sensory Integration Intervention and Treatment
Course Overview
This course is intended for all healthcare professionals who care for pediatric patients with developmental delays in visual perceptual skills and sensory integration disorder. This course is also for healthcare professionals seeking knowledge regarding typical visual perceptual development from birth to school-aged children to better identify current developmental status and expected milestones for pediatric patients. Sensory regulation and patterns of growth will also be discussed to better enhance treatment and identify needs of the developing child. Various effective interventions will be shared to assist healthcare professionals with current and future patients to improve function in all areas of children’s occupations such as play, school-based needs, activities of daily living, relationships and social skills, and more.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Analyze sensory integration and receive an introduction to origins and theory development.
- Predict why sensory integration is central to development and child occupations.
- Differentiate sensory integration problems including modulation problems, poor sensory discrimination and perception, problems related to vestibular proprioceptive functions, and difficulties related to praxis.
- Assess typical development of visual perceptual skills.
- Determine the developmental sequence of visual perception including the visual-receptive and visual-cognitive functions.
About the Author/Presenter
Cynthia Diaz is a proud Florida International University graduate who has been a practicing occupational therapist for 17 years. Her professional journey has taken her to various realms of the healthcare world including outpatient, inpatient, acute care, hospice, and her favorite, pediatrics! With four children of her own, she is passionate about children and making their world more accessible through play, work, and independence.
