Providing Control of Devices in the Environment for Play, Independence, and Participation

About the Course
Many people with motor, cognitive, and/or sensory limitations will have difficulty controlling basic devices in their environment, including audiovisual equipment, lighting, thermostats, power door openers, phone, and hospital bed. Electronic Aids to Daily Living (EADLs) have been used to provide a means of independent control for many years, but are now outdated and overpriced. Newer consumer technologies, such as Alexa, are providing new options to increase control of devices in the environment. This course, Providing Control of Devices in the Environment for Play, Independence, and Participation, will address the problems with EADLs, the solutions, and applications.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify specific reasons many people with disabilities have limited control of devices in the environment.
  • Identify assistive technology solutions to provide control of devices in the environment.
