Course Overview
This course will offer practical solutions to some of the most challenging real-life situations you face with patients who fall or are at risk of falling. We will review how to better predict and prevent falls with effective fall prevention tools and strategies. We will also introduce the latest advances in fall prevention, including details from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and their detailed fall prevention initiative, STEADI (Stop Elderly Accidents and Injuries). 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Investigate the latest advances in fall prevention and the most up-to-date information from the CDC STEADI initiative.
  • Practice comprehensive assessments to identify issues with balance, visual-spatial functioning, proprioception, and other root causes of fall risk.
  • Inspect available interventions and choose appropriate ones for safely restoring balance, functional mobility, and occupational performance in patients with varying root causes of fall risk.
  • Demonstrate home exercise programs that build strength and coordination in patients with limited mobility and function.
  • Investigate ideas and plans that will protect older adults and others at high risk of injury from falling.
  • Debate home-based risk factors that contribute to falls and determine how these risk factors can be reduced in daily activities. 

About the Author/Presenter 
Shelly Denes, PT, CFPS, C/NDT, CGCP is an expert in fall prevention and neuro-rehab with more than 25 years of experience treating patients with hemiplegia and neuromuscular disorders.  She has been involved extensively with neuroprosthetic devices, lower extremity orthotics, and exoskeletons at the Rehab Institute of Michigan. She helped create the certifications of ”Fall Prevention Specialist” and “Geriatric Care Professional” with the Evergreen Certifications, has the certifications herself, and sits on their advisory boards.
