Pharmacotherapy to Assist with Smoking Cessation

About the Course:
After completing this course, pharmacists will be able to help select first-line pharmacotherapy to assist smokers in quitting, educate smokers on potential adverse effects of these pharmacotherapies, and provide counseling that includes how and when to properly take the medication

Learning Objectives:
After completing this course, the learner will be able to: 
  • Describe the epidemiology of tobacco use in the United States.
  • Identify the health consequences of smoking and the health benefits of smoking cessation.
  • Describe the role of nicotine in tobacco dependence.
  • Outline principles of smoking cessation interventions.
  • Describe key clinical considerations (such as mechanism of action, dosing, adverse effects, drug interactions) for medications indicated as aids for smoking cessation.
About the Author:
Michael Kotlyar, PharmD, earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Purdue University.  He completed a research fellowship jointly sponsored by the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy and Glaxo Wellcome.  Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy.  His research has focused on evaluating various aspects of tobacco dependence, including assessing use of medications to assist in the smoking cessation attempt and assessing the role of stress on smoking behavior.  He is currently an author on 35 peer-reviewed publications, the majority of which focus on various aspects of smoking behavior.

How to receive credit:
  • A minimum test score of 75 percent is needed to obtain a credit.
