Antihypertensive Medications: Pharmacology and Healthcare Considerations

18

Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive overview of antihypertensive medications, focusing on their pharmacology and healthcare considerations. Designed for healthcare professionals, it covers the latest guidelines and classifications for hypertension management, including the 2017 ACC/AHA stages of hypertension. Participants will gain detailed insights into first-line treatments such as calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and diuretics, as well as additional options like sympatholytic drugs, direct vasodilators, and selective aldosterone-receptor antagonists. The course explores each drug class’s mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics while emphasizing practical aspects such as adverse effects, drug interactions, and patient management strategies. By the end of this course, learners will be equipped with the knowledge to manage hypertension and address associated complications effectively.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Understand and differentiate between normal blood pressure (BP), elevated BP, stage 1 hypertension (HTN), stage 2 HTN, and hypertensive crises according to the 2017 American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association guidelines.
  • Examine the pharmacology (mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics) of antihypertensive medications.
  • Identify the healthcare considerations of each class of antihypertensive medications.
  • Discuss additional antihypertensive options used when first-line treatments are ineffective, such as sympatholytic drugs.
