Naloxone for Opioid Rescue
Course Overview
Review the use of the opioid antagonist rescue therapy for opioid overdose reversal; including the mechanisms of opioid overdose, risk factors, opioid use reduction strategies, and the mechanisms, benefits, risks, formulations, and dispensing considerations of opioid antagonist rescue therapies. The course also provides information to help educate patients and caregivers about identification of opioid overdose and how to manage an overdose situation.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Describe the risk factors for opioid overdose.
- Explain how opioid antagonists work to reverse opioid overdose.
- Review information that should be included in patient/caregiver education on opioid overdose and opioid antagonist use.
- Discuss potential adverse events following the use of opioid antagonist rescue therapy.
- Compare the different formulations of opioid antagonists.
- List the steps that should be taken when responding to an opioid overdose.
- Identify support programs and resources for patients and caregivers for follow-up care after the use of opioid antagonist rescue therapy.
About the Author/Presenter
Flora Harp, PharmD is the Director of Content Development at Colibri Healthcare. She obtained her PharmD degree from Wayne State University and completed a community practice residency at CVS Health, focused on clinical program support. Flora went on to hold different roles at CVS Health where she supported various clinical services and programs. Prior to joining TRC Healthcare in 2016, Flora was a Clinical Services Manager at Thrifty White Pharmacy where she oversaw clinical programs including immunizations, rapid diagnostic testing, and medication therapy management. In her 9 years as an Editor at TRC Healthcare, Flora authored and managed the content development and accreditation for hundreds of continuing education courses. Flora is passionate about providing clinicians with education they need to take care of their patients and is interested in tying educational interventions back to clinical outcomes.
