Course Overview

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Describe evaluation and treatment planning for patients in pain.
  • Discuss treatment options for patients in pain, including non-pharmacological treatment modalities, non-opioid medications, and the use of opioids.
  • Discuss the treatment of opioid use disorder, including medically supervised withdrawal, medication-assisted treatment, and overdose management.
  • Review the treatment of benzodiazepine use disorder.
  • Describe the process of advanced care planning and ensuring a patient’s end-of-life preferences are met.
  • Discuss the management of common end-of-life symptoms including pain.

About the Author/Presenter 
Katie Blair, PharmD, RPh, is a pharmacist and freelance writer specializing in pharmacy education. She works as a consultant pharmacist in Portland, Oregon, serving skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in the area. Katie also has over six years of experience working as a staff pharmacist at a community pharmacy in Seattle. She graduated from Northeastern University in Boston in 2009 with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.
