Combined Training: Designing Effective Multi-Goal Exercise Programs, 2nd Edition

55

Course Overview
This continuing education course for occupational therapists, physical therapists, and athletic trainers examines combined cardiovascular and resistance training as an evidence-based approach to improving functional strength, mobility, balance, endurance, and weight management. Learners will explore current research on combined training, interference theory, exercise selection, programming strategies, and time-of-day training considerations. Emphasis is placed on designing effective exercise programs that support functional performance, activities of daily living, injury prevention, rehabilitation, return-to-activity goals, and long-term health outcomes. Through research review, case studies, self-assessment activities, and sample training programs, participants will apply practical strategies to enhance client mobility, physical function, and overall quality of life.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Differentiate the effects of interference theory on the design and outcomes of combined training programs.
  • Analyze current research findings related to combined training and their implications for exercise programming.
  • Develop effective combined training sessions and long-term exercise programs to improve functional strength and mobility outcomes.
  • Organize combined training variables to optimize functional strength and mobility outcomes within long-term exercise programs.
  • Integrate evidence-based time-of-day training recommendations into combined training program design.
