Fracture Management for the Forearm, Elbow, and Upper Arm

Course Overview
Using short video clips and photos of treatment activities, equipment, and orthoses, along with presentation of protocols and explanations of surgical procedures, this course prepares the beginning and intermediate therapist to successfully treat patients with upper extremity fractures and associated injuries. Current research is presented to support evidence–based practice, and case studies with reflective questions and discussion are used to facilitate problem solving. 

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

• Differentiate three interventions used to improve proprioception for function.
• Analyze the structures that may be injured with forearm fractures.
• Predict the type of orthosis that will protect the healing structures of a given forearm fracture or fracture dislocation.
• Relate the injured ligament with the activity modification needed to protect it.
• Analyze implicit bias.
• Predict possible reasons for a patient with a complex elbow injury to be making no progress or even losing range of motion from one week to the next.
• Assess the bony, ligamentous, and dynamic stabilizers of the elbow and proximal radioulnar joints.
• Categorize the postop restrictions and activity modification guidelines for patients following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty.
• Analyze strategies for preventing falls.

About the Author/Presenter 
Susan Mitchell, MS, OTR/L, CHT, COMT, has worked closely with onsite orthopaedic surgeons and other medical professionals to provide quality care to patients with upper extremity disorders for over 30 years. Other accomplishments include collaboration on a research study published in Orthopedics journal in April 2006, authoring a chapter on extensor injuries in ASHT's Test Prep for the CHT Exam (3rd edition), and numerous speaking engagements on topics ranging from ergonomics to splint fabrication to extensor tendon management.
