Introduction to Pelvic Health and Rehabilitation for Healthcare Professionals

37

Course Overview
This course covers the anatomy and role of the pelvic floor in everyday function, as well as common pelvic floor disorders that rehabilitation providers encounter in the clinic. Using demonstrations, case studies, and interactive learning, providers will learn how to screen for common pelvic floor disorders and identify when to refer out. In addition, this course is meant to acquaint professionals with the tools, tests, and measures that may be unique to a pelvic floor PT/OT evaluation. Some intervention strategies for common pelvic floor diagnoses will also be addressed, so general providers can feel confident providing patient education on what happens as they navigate the healthcare system.

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Define pelvic floor foundational anatomy and function.
  • Identify risk factors for and types of common pelvic floor dysfunctions.
  • Choose appropriate screening tools and patient education for pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD).
  • Recognize appropriate referral sources for patients.
  • Summarize pelvic floor muscle examination and intervention strategies that support participation in daily occupations including toileting, sexual activity, and physical exercise.
  • Match new knowledge from a case example to better problem solve for patients.

About the Author/Presenter
Lacey Salberg, PT, DPT, studied public health at Tulane University in New Orleans and then went on to pursue her doctorate degree in physical therapy at Rutgers University in 2018. In her 7 years of experience, she has worked in a myriad of rehab settings including general orthopedics, pelvic floor, oncology, vestibular, and home care. Her interest in pelvic floor therapy grew out of wanting to fill the unmet needs of patients in her community who expressed demand for pre- and postpartum care. Lacey pioneered pelvic floor services for women at an outpatient private practice in Brooklyn, New York, and since then has expanded her clinical experience to include working with male patients and transgender patients receiving gender affirmation surgery in a hospital-based outpatient setting. In addition to experience in physical therapy, Lacey is a marathon runner, former USA Gymnastics competitive gymnast, public health advocate, and salsa dancer. She is an active member of the APTA and is LSVT Big Certified.
