Mat Assessment for Wheelchair Users
Course Overview
A key component of wheelchair seating assessment is the mat assessment. This course will present the mat assessment, including evaluating the client in both supine and sitting. Appropriate measurement intake will also be addressed. Translating mat assessment findings into appropriate seating applications will be illustrated through several case studies. This course is applicable to therapy professionals who work with clients using wheelchairs and also applies to multiple practice settings.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Apply three components of a mat assessment to a client requiring wheelchair seating.
- Apply the appropriate steps in assessing available hip and knee flexion for a seated position in a client requiring wheelchair seating.
- Distinguish where postural support is required in a wheelchair seating system based on the mat assessment.
- Apply mat assessment findings to specific seating recommendations.
About the Author/Presenter
Michelle Lange OTR/L, ATP/SMS is an occupational therapist with over 38 years of experience and has been in private practice, Access to Independence, for over 19 years, where she currently focuses on education and consultation. She is a well-respected lecturer, both nationally and internationally, and has authored numerous texts, chapters, and articles. She is the co-editor of Seating and Wheeled Mobility: A Clinical Resource Guide (first and second editions). Michelle is a RESNA Fellow and a RESNA certified ATP and SMS. She is also a member of the Clinician Task Force.
