About the Course
Designed to introduce massage therapists, athletic trainers and wellness professionals, this course shows learners how to effectively manipulate adhesions, scar tissue, and trigger points to improve patient outcomes.  The purpose of this course is to promote awareness of restrictions in muscle and fascia and tissue adhesions as well as resulting pain and dysfunction. We will explore safe, effective techniques shown to reduce tissue restriction and restore optimum function.   

Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the epidemiology of muscular and myofascial trigger points 
  • Name common syndromes associated with presence of trigger points  
  • Define referred pain 
  • Define adhesions and their effect on motor function   
  • Identify the three layers of muscular fascia and implications for movement restriction  
  • Explain the elements of sliding filament theory and their roles in trigger formation  
  • Distinguish between trigger points and acupressure points 
  • List the benefits of muscle release techniques. 
  • Distinguish self-myofascial release from myofascial release administered by a therapist.  
  • Differentiate active from passive tissue release. 

About the Author/Presenter
Jim Menz began his career in health and wellness in 1992.  Since then, he has worked with a spectrum of clients in community, athletic and rehabilitative settings.  He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Corrective Exercise Specialist, holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science and a post- graduate certificate in Rehabilitative Science.  He is licensed for massage therapy in New Jersey, where he maintains a practice in corrective exercise and bodywork. 

How to Receive Credit 

  • View the entire course  which requires a 2-hour commitment of time. 
  • After completion of the course, complete the final examination.  A passing grade of 75% is required. Test questions link content to learning outcomes as a method to enhance individualized learning and material retention.
