Treatment and Prevention of ACL Injury: An Evidence-Based Approach
Course Overview
This course is intended for healthcare professionals who evaluate and treat clients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The course discusses the mechanism of injury and risk factors of an ACL rupture and the subsequent surgical and rehabilitation approaches for a safe return to sport. The course utilizes evidence-based practice for optimal ACL rehabilitation in order to reduce the risk of re-injury following surgery and rehabilitation. Additionally, the course evaluates existing prevention strategies to minimize the athlete’s risk of an ACL injury.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Describe the anatomy of the ACL and surrounding structures with biomechanics of the knee.
- Discuss the mechanisms of injury, diagnosis, and risk factors of ACL injury.
- Evaluate the medical management options following ACL injury including graft selection.
- Formulate a rehabilitation program using evidence-based interventions following ACL reconstruction.
- Evaluate the objective measures and testing criteria for a safe return to sport.
- Evaluate the programs for prevention of ACL injury.
About the Author/Presenter
Dr. Ryan Wadas, PT, DPT earned his bachelor’s degree in human biology from the University of Kansas and his doctorate in physical therapy from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Wadas has over 12 years of outpatient orthopedic physical therapist (PT) experience, the majority of which he served as a clinical instructor working with PT and PT assistant (PTA) students. He also has 11 years of experience in academics. Dr. Wadas is currently a professor at South University’s PTA program in Tampa, Florida, with 7 years as adjunct faculty at Nova Southeastern University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program in Clearwater, Florida. Dr. Wadas has advanced training and coursework in spinal manipulation through the American Academy of Manipulative Therapy (AAMT), the McKenzie Method to Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), vestibular therapy training, myofascial practitioner cupping certification, and selective functional movement assessment (SFMA).
