Course Overview
Supporting clients in breaking the cycle of trauma and abuse involves helping them understand their history and how it impacts them today, including how it impacts their relationships, parenting, and other areas of their lives. Supporting them in developing awareness and understanding helps pave the way for developing insight into new ways of interacting with others, and other ways to help break the cycle of trauma and abuse in families.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

  • Describe the dysfunctional and abusive characteristics commonly found in traumatic family systems.
  • Discuss the long-term emotional and psychological impacts of childhood family trauma on survivors, including psychological, attachment, and relational impacts.
  • Identify and implement at least three coping strategies or clinical interventions to support clients in healing and moving forward.

About the Author/Presenter 
Kaytee Gillis, LCSW, is a psychotherapist and author with a passion for working with survivors of traumatic families and relationships. She is the author of several books, including Breaking the Cycle: The 6 Stages of Healing from Childhood Family Trauma and Healing from Parental Abandonment and Neglect. Her work has been featured in TIME magazine, BBC news, MensHealth, and other media outlets. She is a regular contributor to Psychology Today where she maintains a column with weekly articles for support for survivors.
