Course Overview
This course is designed to provide an overview into aspects of the older adult population as a cohort, understanding of different types of dementias, and thorough insight into the different cognitive assessment tools. It should be noted that these assessment tools vary based on symptoms and input from patient caregivers, and they are not necessarily diagnostic tools; rather they are tools that can unveil potential signs and symptoms of dementia and prompt the need for additional testing and examination by trained healthcare professionals. Learners will be able to identify types of dementia and the need to discern how to treat the patient most effectively in a safe, dignified manner with appropriate support, if necessary. Other aspects of this course include insights into preventative care and healthy lifestyle choices.
Learning Outcomes
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Examine aspects of aging and impact on longevity relative to Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD)
- Distinguish types of dementia and their symptoms Identify types of assessments to address specific age-related changes
- Identify modifiable lifestyle risk factors that can directly impact brain and psychological health
- Distinguish between various cognitive assessment tools for dementia symptoms
About the Author/Presenter
Dr. Joy Siegel, EdD, MBA,is a gerontologist who has worked with community-based organizations, universities, hospitals, and Medicare Advantage health plans, designing programs designed to engage and improve well-being. Programs designed include loneliness mitigation, improving functional skills, falls prevention, polypharmacy, and aspects of aging. Dr. Joy has developed hundreds of hours of continuing education content, with topics such as Patient Satisfaction, Delivering Compassionate Care, Aging and Resilience, and Geriatric Assessments. She is a faculty member at the Kiral C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine (KPCOM) at Nova Southeastern University. Currently she is working with digital health innovators in partnership with the Area Administration on Aging in her community.
