Identifying and Responding to Domestic Violence for Healthcare Professionals

Course Overview
This course provides health professionals with the background information, knowledge, and strategies to effectively identify, screen for, and intervene when a patient in their practice is experiencing domestic violence. After challenging existing misconceptions around the causes and risk factors for domestic violence, it discusses in detail the signs and symptoms of both domestic violence in general, and non-fatal strangulation more specifically. It explains best practices around skills and techniques to screen for and intervene in domestic violence situations that patients may be experiencing.

Learning Outcomes 
Upon the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:

• Describe misconceptions about the nature of and risk factors for domestic violence.
• Identify the signs and symptoms of domestic violence in general and non-fatal strangulation in particular.
• Create effective screening protocols and a safe environment for patients to disclose domestic violence victimization.
• Identify appropriate ways to intervene when patients disclose they are a victim of domestic violence.

About the Author/Presenter 
Wendy Regoeczi, PhD, MPH, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of South Carolina. Her research and teaching focus on violent crime, particularly domestic violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and violence prevention. Her research has been funded by the National Institute of Justice and the National Science Foundation. She is the author of the forthcoming book Domestic Violence: Examining the Facts.
