Neglect and Abandonment: Supporting Clients
Course Overview
This course offers an examination of neglect and abandonment as unique forms of trauma, and their lasting impact on survivors. Practitioners will explore how these experiences shape individuals throughout their lives, drawing on many different trauma theories and frameworks such as attachment theory and developmental psychopathology. This course provides therapeutic interventions and practical skills for mental and behavioral health professionals working with clients affected by neglect and/or abandonment by their caregivers, offering tools to support and empower clients who are in all stages of healing. Through case studies, interactive exercises, and evidence-based practices, healthcare professionals will gain effective strategies and approaches, with attention to cultural and contextual factors, including some of the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups such as LGBTQ and BIPOC survivors. Ethical and professional considerations are also addressed.
