Course Overview
There is no question that maternal health disparities are a significant problem in the United States. Inequalities have been noted associated with many factors, including education level, literacy, and socioeconomic status. However, the greatest disparities have been noted among racial/ethnic minority women and have been linked to explicit and implicit biases in healthcare providers and systems. It is of the utmost importance that those working in health care and caring for patients in the peripartum and postpartum period are committed on lowering the morbidity and mortality rates of all mothers of color. Promoting equity and cultural competence, effectively addressing modifiable risk factors, improving communication and monitoring, and engaging in regular training are needed to improve these maternal health disparities. -

No substance, legal or illegal, has a more paradoxical mythology than alcohol. It is undeniably one of the most widely and safely used intoxicants in the world; however, it is also potent and dangerous, both from a psychologic and physiologic viewpoint. Alcohol is currently responsible for more deaths and personal destruction than any other known substance of abuse, with the exception of tobacco. All of this is known with scientific certainty. Alcohol is legal, easily obtained, and supported by a multi-billion-dollar worldwide industry. Alcohol consumption reduces social inhibitions and produces pleasure and a sense of well-being. It also can have some rather impressive positive medical effects, such as a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. Anxiety disorders are characterized by states of chronic, excessive dread or fear of everyday situations. The fear and avoidance can be life-impairing and disabling. Anxiety disorders result from the interaction of biopsychosocial factors, whereby genetic vulnerability interacts with situations, stress, or trauma to produce clinically significant syndromes. The influence from hereditary factors and adverse psychosocial experiences on anxiety disorder pathogenesis and pathophysiology is complex, but neuroscience advances have greatly improved the understanding of the underlying factors in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders. -

More than 100 years ago, Sigmund Freud's pioneering work with dreams revealed a hidden world of unconscious thoughts and wishes. Freud's theories and methods continue to speak to mental health professionals. About the Course
The opioid epidemic is a major public health crisis affecting Americans at alarming rates. In 2020, an estimated 2.7 million people aged 12 or older in the United States had an opioid use disorder (OUD) within the past 12 months, including 2.3 million people with a prescription OUD (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA], 2021). The number of drug overdose deaths has continued to rise, with over 107,000 deaths reported in 2021 (NIDA, 2024). This course will focus on opioid addiction and overdose, with close attention paid to the trends of both prescription and street drug abuse. In this course, the healthcare professional will learn about the pharmacology of opioids, risk factors for opioid addiction, and individual and community consequences of addiction. Additionally, the provider will become familiar with the levels of prevention theory and how to effectively prevent, screen, treat, and reduce harm from opioid addiction.
