Here's what you need to renew your Iowa Dental license

  • Infection Control - 1 hour
  • Iowa Jurisprudence - 1 hour
  • Dental Radiography - 2 hours (for DAs who hold a radiography qualification)

Additional requirements for renewal:

  • CPR - up to 3 hours can be claimed by completing a nationally-recognized “hands-on” course with a clinical component
  • Abuse Identification and Reporting Training - up to 4 hours can be claimed by completing the Department of Human Services training every 3 years

For Dentists, - if have anesthesia / conscious sedation permit, must have 6 hrs of the 30 req. in Sedation courses. . You cannot, however, obtain abuse training from an out-of-state provider. These courses must cover the specific requirements of Iowa law. --- CPR certification good for 3 CE hrs and must be live. Within 6 months of employment & every 5 yrs., Abuse Identification and Reporting Training can be claimed for completing courses. The general rule of thumb for course topic- is that any course related to clinical practice is acceptable. Courses that are approved for dentists and hygienists are also approved for dental assistants. Board has determined that courses relating to HIPAA regulations and courses about Iowa jurisprudence, which have been prior-approved by the Board are acceptable.

NEW! DEA MATE ACT:
Beginning with DEA initial registrations or renewals starting June 27, 2023, all DEA-registered practitioners (with the exception of DVM-only license holders) are required to complete 8 hours of one-time training on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.

Mandatory Subjects:

  • Infection Control - 1 hour
  • Iowa Jurisprudence - 1 hour
  • Opioids - 1 hour (required for dentists who prescribe opioids within the renewal period)
  • Sedation - 6 hour (required for dentists who hold a moderate sedation or general anesthesia permit)

Additional requirements for renewal:

  • CPR - up to 3 hours can be claimed by completing a nationally-recognized “hands-on” course with a clinical component
  • Abuse Identification and Reporting Training - up to 4 hours can be claimed by completing the Department of Human Services training every 3 years
