Mark Bigelow is an author, inventor, entertaining public speaker and a veteran massage therapist since 1986, specializing in muscular pain and sports injuries. Affectionately called “MacGyver” by his students, it is not unusual to see him use a mop, a rope, a beach ball, springs, Play-Doh, elastic bands, sponges and many other home-made “teaching toys” to explain and demonstrate basic concepts that apply directly to your therapy.
In 1992 he invented the first seated abdominal exerciser called Air-O-Flex developed by Fitness Quest of Ohio, an idea originating after pumping a flat tire on a golf cart. Jackie Zeaman of “General Hospital” fame was the celebrity spokesperson in the TV commercials.
He was recently awarded patent number 7413441 for creating the “Sarcomere – Three Dimensional Teaching Model” which is now manufactured and marketed by Denoyer-Geppert Science Company of Chicago, and used extensively in his classes to illustrate proper muscular contraction and its dysfunction.
Mark has lectured on repetitive movement syndromes at many colleges and massage schools after seven years related experience as therapist and consultant to Levi-Strauss & Co. in North Carolina. He has developed a self-help video on the subject of carpal tunnel syndrome previously sold through Amazon.com and other outlets. Along with 4 years teaching at the Palm Beach Academy of Health and Beauty and two years as an adjunct instructor at the Palm Beach Community College, he has been a speaker at the:
- 2005 AMTA National Convention in Albuquerque, NM
- 2006 and 2007 Florida State Massage Therapy Association Conventions
- 2007 AMTA New England Regional Conference in Boston, MA

The world of massage welcomed Ben into it’s “house” in 1979. His 37 years of service to others since then has been a varied and eclectic path. He has provided therapy for the general population, professionals across the athletic spectrum, hospice and oncology patients, and those with special needs. He has treated newborns that were less than an hour old with the most gentle approach and then worked on professional football linemen utilizing deep therapy techniques. He is unabashedly excited about his profession and “brings it” every day to his patients and his students. To his closest friends and family he is truly a therapy nerd. One of his favorite quotes is, “I stand on the shoulders of giants.”. Ben will readily credit, and share, the names of the individuals he has met through the health care profession during the last four decades that have changed his life and helped him grow professionally and personally. Some were health care mentors, others were patients, and still many more were his students. As an instructor Ben blends humor, a gift for analogy, and critical Socratic thinking skills to engage his students. His entertaining approach to presenting is purposeful in promoting assimilation and retention of the material being taught.
In 2004 he was awarded the Florida State Massage Therapy Association’s “Service Award” for initiating an oncology massage program at his county hospital, and for traversing the state to help train therapists in hospice service while motivating several chapters to form Hospice Teams. He also served as a consultant for the formal hiring of massage therapists within hospice organizations.

My story started well back before I ever considered being a massage therapist – It started with a car crash back in 1992. My wife, before she was my wife, broke her neck and most of the smaller bones on her left side when she collided with a drunk driver. Fast forward 8 years, her therapist had retired three years earlier and I had just been laid off from my high tech job. I made the decision then to make a marked change in my career, that decision started me on a path much different then I had ever expected it to be.
I graduated from two different massage schools with a total of 765 hours. From that point, I dedicated every free dime to furthering my specialty and crafting the skill set my wife needed to recover from her accident. Seminars and continuing education were a priority, and I greedily absorbed everything I could on pathology, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapies, Active Release Techniques, orthopedic testing, and assessment- any clinical modality I could find that would compliment my existing skillset
I have 26 years experience in the martial arts and was a manger, stand up coach and cornerman for an amateur mixed martial arts team. I ran sports massage teams for Solvang triathlon camps, Solvang Century, Carmichael Training, and VisionQuest. My clientele has included professional athletes, Olympians, movie stars, local radio and TV personalities, and hundreds of average Janes and Joes recovering from injuries and trying to improve the quality of their life.
